It was my first day of work at Riis in 1981. It was raining hard. I got off the greenline bus with a bunch of the other new guys from the Bronx. We walked to the lifeguard shack and opened the door. There was nothing but a bunch of guys getting dressed. The guys I came in with automatically told me to go outside and look for the women's lockeroom. I was outside getting soaked. George came outside and got me. He said, "come here honey, your lockeroom is in here as well." He and Sandy were always so friendly and generous. We sat bay 3 quite often. On down days, he would play the trumpet. He used to give me rides into Manhattan to make my commute shorter. I will miss knowing that he is around. I learned a lot from him as a lifeguard.
